Fitting into Bloomberg's Next Four Years
By Gerson Borrero
Well, no sorpresa here.
The final numbers for Mike Bloomberg’s projected victory at the polls today will be official once the Board of Elections certifies the results.
We still don’t know the exact margin of the triunfo. What we do know is that the incumbent Mayor of the Big Mango will continue to rule, from City Hall, the lives of more than eight million New Yorkers.
The reelection of the incumbent had been heralded by every poll for months, ever since Bloomberg overturned the term limits law that New Yorkers had voted for in two separate elections.
Given the whopping investment of over 100 million dollars that the Billionaire Mayor made in order to remain in power for another four years, I don’t think he’ll be pleased with the spread.
But that’s for others to talk about.
Lo que yo quiero saber, Senor Alcalde, is how Latinos fit into your next four years.
We know you read and speak nuestro idioma. Thanks for recognizing our presence in that way.
Pero, having one Deputy Mayor of Latino ancestry in your next administration isn’t going to cut it. And in terms of Latino commissioners, last time I counted, I had fingers left over in this hand.
Unacceptable.
How about 10 commissioners, Mr. Mayor? Oh yeah, I forgot. You don’t do racial quotas. Well, neither do I.
I’m talking about competent, qualified, New Yorkers who happen to be Latinos that you can pick from.
And while we’re at it, how about supporting Latino entrepreneurs and civic leaders across the board: from small business owners in to innovators in the fields of technology and communications, to heads of non-profits.
After eight years of getting our support, Mayor Bloomberg should admit that what he’s done for us ha sido muy poco.
We simply have not been treated as iguales.
That’s the way I see it.
